It came from the Ambassador to the US from Iran. His family owned the mine and when Ayatollah Khomeini took power the turquoise mine owner left Iran and 

defected to the US and  my friend purchased 29 pounds of the last of his turquoise that he had. He paid $2000.00 a pound back in 1980
